ELC CELMA LED Forum at Light and Building Fair on 14th April 2010
The European Lighting Industry - ELC representing the lamp manufacturers, and CELMA representing luminaire and luminaire component manufacturers -, organized on 14 April April 2010 the first joint CELMA / ELC LED Forum hosted by ZVEI during the Light + Building Fair in
Frankfurt.
The Forum was attended by 200 participants with representatives
from the European Commission, officials from authorities inside and outside the EU, representatives of Energy Agencies, lighting press and CEOs from the lighting industry and Lighting Associations from several regions of the
world.
The presentors gave their views on LED lighting in four sessions and demonstrated that lighting with LED lamps,
modules & luminaires is a viable choice.
Session 1 – Setting the scene by the European Commission
Session 2 – State of the art for LED luminaires
Session 3 – State of the art for LED lamps & LED modules
Session 4 – How standardisation and other initiatives can help to fulfil customers’ expectations with LED lighting solutions.

ELC conference on Energy Efficient Lighting during the EUSEW 2009
The ELC organised a conference on Energy Efficient Lighting during the European Union Sustainable Energy Week in 2009. The ELC conference took place on Monday 9th February 2009 in room S1 in Charlemagne Building (170 Rue de la Loi, 1049 Brussels) from
09.30 until 12.00.
The aim of the ELC conference was to present several sectors where lighting is developing new technologies that comply with energy efficiency requirements (domestic, street, office and industry lighting). The conference focused on presenting the current solutions that lighting can bring in the field of energy efficiency, as well as the challenges present in this area.
As first, Mr Jan Denneman - president of the ELC - held a presentation with the title "Energy efficiency in the European lighting industry: our efforts to make the switch". He spoke about the importance of lighting in moving to a low carbon economy, the barriers to change, the strategy of the lighting industry and finally about an EU co-funded pilot project “Bottom up to Kyoto”, which is coordinated by ELC and aiming at helping three Central and Eastern European municipalities to switch to energy efficient street and office lighting systems.
As next presentor Mr András Tóth - European Commission, DG TREN, Policy Officer in Unit D/3 - spoke about the EU legislative instruments for lighting. In his presentation, he gave a detailed overview on the area of Commission's Energy Efficiency Action Plan and the relevant EU legislations. He spoke - among others - about legislations on energy labelling, ecolabelling for lightbulbs and Ecodesign of Energy Using Products.
The last presentation was delivered by Ms Mariangiola Fabbri - Energy Policy Officer, WWF - under the title "Energy Efficient lighting: an NGO perspective". She focused on the difference between the potentially possible and the actually planned energy savings by applying the recent policies. She raised the question, whether it is possible to achieve bigger saving than the policy will induce, and what is needed for that.
Following the presentations, a very lively panel discussion took place, which offered the audience an excellent insight into energy efficient lighting issues - potential energy savings, achievable savings, technological trends, customer preferences, market surveillance, etc. - seen from the perspective of the European Commission, environmental and consumer protection NGOs as well as the lighting industry.

The
ELC participates in EuroparlTV live debate
The Secretary General of the ELC, Gerald
Strickland, participated on the 16th of September in a live debate on
EuroParlTV, the new web TV of the European Parliament with the topic
“Energy Saving and Public Lighting”. The other participants
included Jan Březina
(a member of the European Parliament from the
Czech
Republic, and member of the Committee on Industry, Research and
Energy), as
well as Isabelle Corten (an expert in Public Lighting from the
Municipality
of
Brussels). Mr. Strickland stressed the importance of high quality lamps in
reducing electricity consumption in public lighting and the commitment
of ELC member companies for bringing energy efficient street lighting
solutions on the market. To access the EuroParlTV website click here.

Second
Global Lamp Forum (GLF) in Tokio 4th of July
Some of the GLF conclusions:
-
Define relevant performance aspects of a
"Global Standard for CFLi".
-
Come to a global position on collection and
recycling of mercury containing lamps.
-
Ensure that the debate on health effects of
mercury of CFLi lamps is based on reliable
scientific data

European Environmental
Bureau conference on lamps
The European Environmental
Bureau (EEB), a federation of over 142 environmental citizens’
organisations in the EU, has organised a conference "Mercury
containing lamps under the spotlight" on 27 June 2008 in
Brussels. The programme of the conference included presentations from
the European Commission on the actions related to energy saving lamps,
lamp manufacturers (General Electric, Osram, Philips and Sylvania) and
the Secretary General of the ELC on the content of mercury in lamps,
as well as Member States and experts on lamp collection and recycling
issues. The presentations were followed by a panel discussion.
The ELC member companies
have committed to reducing quantities of mercury in energy efficient
lamps below the limits currently required under the RoHS Directive. Speaking
at a conference, the ELC Secretary General Mr. Gerald Strickland has pointed out that different mercury limits are needed
depending on the technical characteristics of each lamp group concerned
(such as technology, phosphor, size, length, wattage, lifetime,
production process, dosing technology, purpose, etc). If mercury
limits are too ambitious, this could for instance result in a
reduction of the lamp’s life, leading to higher mercury consumption
overall.

ELC at the Light+Building 2008 in Frankfurt
The 5th Light+Building trade fair was held from 6
to 11 April 2008 in Frankfurt am Main. All ELC member companies were
represented at this international trade fair for architecture and
technology. A wide range of products and services in the fields of
lighting, electrical engineering and building automation was presented
by over 2000 exhibitors.
Energy efficiency was the main theme of the fair,
and it was fully supported by all ELC member companies, which showed a
huge variety of energy-saving lighting solutions. At the same time,
technology was well combined with design. Solid State Lighting (LEDs)
was to be seen at almost every exhibition stand.
