The table below presents the estimated sales data for main lamp categories on the Western
European market. These data can be used to calculate the annual amount of materials and
substances used, put on the market and the associated annual energy consumption rates.
Retrofit LED lamps are not included: they have not yet made major inroads on the general
lighting market.
In the pie chart the electricity usage is shown over the different lamp categories, where
the total amount is about 430 TWh yearly. The pie chart in connection with the table
shows, while incandescent lamps are largest in sales by volume, they make up only a
minor share of the total amount of light generated annually. Most light is generated by
fluorescent and HID lamps. The total amount of light is distributed over 80% professional
and 20% domestic use.
